Pace Supply is a leading wholesale distributor of plumbing, heating, and industrial products, supporting a wide network of branches and customers with a high-volume, fast-moving inventory. With tens of thousands of SKUs moving through its warehouse, accurate master data is critical to storage optimization, routing efficiency, and system-wide visibility.
To address inconsistencies in its ERP and ensure every SKU reflected verified, real-world dimensions, Pace Supply turned to MobileDemand for a master record update. The company adopted xDIM mobile dimensioning and xScale S200 solutions, which allow products to be dimensioned in the air, right where they sit on shelves - without moving items or relying on large, stationary equipment. This mobile workflow provides a flexible, efficient, and accurate way to capture product data directly at the source.
Before xDIM, Pace Supply relied on a traditional, stationary dimensioning system, that created significant operational friction. The bulky, fixed equipment required products to be transported to a single location for measurement, pulling inventory away from where work was actually happening. As a result, dimensions were often captured first and entered into internal systems later in the day rather than in real time.
The system also demanded constant maintenance, including keeping a glass surface perfectly clean, as even small amounts of dust could lead to inaccurate measurements. Large or oversized items were difficult to process through a stationary system, often requiring extra handling and workarounds. Warehouse teams also depended on scales that added another step to the workflow, requiring items to be moved yet again, further slowing operations and limiting flexibility.
With approximately 30,000 items requiring measurement, Pace Supply needed a more scalable, flexible approach to capturing accurate item data.
With two xDIM mobile dimensioning devices paired with two xScale units, Pace Supply can now capture accurate item data anywhere the product lives - from shelving high in the rafters to items sitting directly on the warehouse floor. Products are measured in place, without being pulled, repositioned, or moved to a fixed station.
Employees measure dimensions directly in the air by aiming the tablet-based xDIM device at products, instantly capturing length, width, and height. In most cases, xScale is used simultaneously to collect weight.
The mobile setup allows teams to measure wherever the product is stored, eliminating the need for forklifts to move heavy equipment and reducing downtime. Six employees were trained on xDIM, and the adoption process was quick. The icon-driven interface makes it clear what is being captured, enabling employees to train peers independently and maintain high throughput.
As Juan Espinoza, DC Configuration Analyst from Pace Supply explained, “Once people started using it, they picked it up quickly. The icons make it really clear what you’re capturing, and the mobility means you’re not fighting the equipment - we can literally dimension items right on the shelves.”
Since adopting xDIM and xScale, Pace Supply has captured approximately 10,000 SKUs, greatly accelerating warehouse coverage. In the future, they now have a straightforward process in place for automatically capturing new products when they arrive.
By dimensioning products in the air, directly on shelves, Pace Supply eliminated the need for heavy, stationary equipment and constant maintenance. Teams can measure items during downtime without disrupting workflow, improving both efficiency and data accuracy. Accurate dimensions and weights now feed directly into internal systems, enhancing operational visibility and warehouse decision-making.
Looking ahead, Pace Supply plans to expand its use of mobile data capture by introducing photo documentation, allowing images to be associated with product records. This upcoming capability will give warehouse teams visual confirmation of what they are picking, further improving accuracy and productivity.
